The Chugoku region 中国地方 is the westernmost end of Honshu, the largest island of Japan. This region is comprised of Tottori, Shimane, Okayama, Hiroshima, and Yamaguchi Prefectures. The western end of the region separated from the island of Kyushu by the Kanmon Strait. The Sea of Japan borders this region to the north. To the south is the Seto Inland Sea. 

 

The cities of the Chugoku region include Hiroshima, Okayama, Kurashiki, Fukuyama, Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi, Kure, Matsue, and Tottori. 

 

The site of the first atomic bombing is in Hiroshima. Yamaguchi prefecture is home to the Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni. Kure, in Hiroshima Prefecture, is home to JMSDF Region Headquarters.
