Hokkaido 北海道 is the second-largest island of Japan and comprises the largest and northernmost prefecture, making up its own region.

 

The Tsugaru Strait separates Hokkaido from the northern tip of Aomori Prefecture, in the Tohoku region on Honshu. The island is bordered by the Sea of Japan (west), Sea of Okhtosk (north), and North Pacific Ocean (east).

 

Hokkaidos cities include Sapporo (the largest), Asahikawa, Hakodate, Otaru, Muroran, and others. The JGSDF Northern Army is headquartered in Sapporo.
