The Kansai region 関西地方 lies in the southern-central region of Honshu, the largest island of Japan. The region is comprised of Mie, Shiga, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo, Nara, and Wakayama Prefectures. The Sea of Japan lies to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the south and east, and the Seto Inland sea to the east.

 

The cities of the Kansai region include Kobe, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Otsu, Sakai, Tsu, Wakayama, Himeji, among others. The ancestral capitals of Japan, Nara and Kyoto, are here. The greater Osaka area is the second-largest metropolitan area after Tokyo. Maizuru in Kyoto Prefecture is home to the JMSDF Region Headquarters. The JGSDF Central Army is Headquartered in Itami, Hyogo.
