Historical sites of Kyushu

Nagasaki Peace Park, Nagasaki, Japan
Nagasaki Peace Park,
Nagasaki, Japan

Kyushu 九州 is the third-largest island of Japan's four main islands and the most southerly of the four largest islands. This region is comprised of Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima Prefectures. The Sea of Japan borders Kyushu to the west, and the Pacific Ocean to the south and east. Kyushu is separated from the Republic of Korea by the Tsushima Strait.

The cities of Kyushu include Fukuoka, Kitakyushu, Kumamoto, Kagoshima, Kurume, Miyazaki, Oita, Saga, and Sasebo, among others.

The second and last atomic bomb used in combat was dropped on Nagasaki. There is U.S. Navy base at Sasebo, which is also home to JMSDF Region Headquarters. JASDF Region Headquarters is located in Kasuga Air Base in Fukuoka. The JGSDF's Western Army is headquartered in Kumamoto.

Officially, the Ryukyu islands and Okinawa are included in the Kyushu region, but they have been separated on this website for ease of understanding. The Island chain stretches south-southwest from Kagoshima prefecture on Kyushu toward the northeast tip of Taiwan.
