The Republic of Palau is an island country in the Micronesia encompassing approximately 340 islands in the western part of the Caroline Islands, whereas the eastern and central parts make up the Federated States of Micronesia.

The islands of Palau were central to the administration of the Japanese Empire in Micronesia and hosted the capital at Koror from 1921 to 1944. Peleliu was the site of bloody fighting between U.S. and Japanese forces in the Second World War. Many wrecks can be found around the archipelago, which is popular with divers.
