The Tohoku region 東北地方 consists of the northeastern portion of Honshu, the largest island of Japan. This region is comprised of Aomiri, Iwate, Miyagi, Akita, Yamagata, and Fukushima Prefectures. The Sea of Japan lies to the west and the North Pacific Ocean to the east.

 

The principal cities of the Tohoku region include Sendai, Iwaki, Koriyama, Akita, Morioka, Aomori, Yamagata, and Hachinohe, among others.

Aomori Prefecture is home to Misawa Air Force base. The JGSDF North Eastern Army is Headquartered in Sendai, Miyagi.
